John Favicchia

One of today’s top players, New York-based John Favicchia has performed and/or recorded with such greats as Steve Khan, Eddie Money, Tony Levin, Chieli Minucci,Charlie Daniels, Lonnie Plaxico, Robbers, John Benitez, Gary US Bonds, Harvie S, Larry Coryell, Dean Brown, Rachel Z,   Joe Butler-Love And Spoonful,  The Tokens,  Felix Cavaliere, Kerry Kearney, Chris Geith, Laco Deczi, Long Island Music Hall Of Fame Band, Mike Pope, Steve Adelson and Bob Malach just to name a few. Known for his extreme versatility, in the course of a week, John can be seen drumming from NYC Jazz Clubs to Rock Concert halls to International Drum Festivals as well as the top Music Festivals around the world. His band Dharma All Stars blends various styles into a powerful blast of fusion that spans the extremes of the dynamic range, Favicchia has been busy touring and recording as well as stepping up to the plate with his own solo releases. His debut, World Time, earned rave reviews and was a Top 10 Critics Pick of the Year in Jazziz Magazine. The latest, Dharma, offers an intriguing mix of melody, eclecticism, and tight ensemble playing with the likes of all-star guests including Khan, Brown, Swartz, Dave Mann, and Chieli Minucci. Favicchia is all about the mindful side of playing drums of making music from the mind, for the mind. Definitely, he says, It’s all about the soul and the mind, but it’s very visceral as well. I’m caressing the sounds out of my cymbals in one bar, but when the music takes off and I start to wail, I take no prisoners.

I have enjoyed the great moments of sharing drumming knowledge and ideas to students for over 45 years.
Teachers worldwide are the backbone of our music industry. Hour after hour, day after day, week after week and year after year endless enthusiasm for drumming is passed on and delivered for others to enjoy our passion.

I started out as only a performer at 12 playing on many local bands making money and having fun. Then at 17 years old, other younger kids approached me about what I was doing. As I began to explain, I saw the connection of my love being passed on to them and me fueling their flame for drumming. This excited me as much as performing.
Living in Long Island offered me a close proximity to New York. Many great players lived here... like Sanford Moeller, Jim Chapin, Al miller (played with the Latin big band Xavier Cugot), Charlie perry ( Benny goodman), Ronnie Benedict (Bob Hope). They taught locally and inspired many. Other teachers like Larry Callahan, Mickey sheen etc. Theses were names of local legends. Wherever you live, there are names like this as a part of our drumming history who helped create the wave of future drummers. Research them and those still here with us, seek them out. You will tap into a treasure of stories, musical playing ideas and a lineage of our history that will lift you up. You will become not only a better player...but a better person just by being in their presence.

Local great teachers in the NY area like John Riley, Bobby Sanabria, Bobby Rondinelli, Mike Sorrentino, Lou Gervey, Pete Greco, in NJ Joe Bergamini, Karl Latham, Boston the late great Alan Dawson, Bob Gollotti. Dave Dicenso and his son Dave jr. Seattle Garey Williams, Steven Smith, Don Garrett, Texas Ed Soph, Steve Houghton and many more. Do the researching! Find them in your area!......yes there are names I am missing...great teachers...you need to find out who they are in your area. Join pas.org to get yo know the chapters in your state. They will assist in you finding the local lineage....

Tireless...always inspired...creative...fun to be with...exciting players...constant students themselves to want to always keep learning...! These are your endless wells of knowledge. And they live near you...! When I was young...three names I heard from great drummers I would hear play in NY were Billy Gladstone, George L. Stone and Sanford Moeller. They taught, Gene Krupa, Buddy, Louie Bellson, Max, Art Blakey, Elvin, Papa Jones, Philly Jones, and Sonny Greer...and many more legends! Many of these drummers you only need their first names! Google these names and watch YouTube videos of them. Make sure you have a seat belt on your chair, because you are in for a wild ride! Get to know them, and remember...they had local teachers to push them further.  They all passed away in the 1960's so I seeked out their best students....Shelly Manne, Henry Adler, Ted reed, Arnie lLang, Joe Morello, Vic firth, Jim Chapin. They taught me the movements for expression that have lasted the test of time! I am still performing and teaching now in my 60's more active than ever. It is now I want to assist in setting up the next generation to be a part of a lineage of drumming passion.

You must begin your quest to seek out the greatness in your area. The answers are close to you in finding your path to drumming success.

Conclusion...
If you recognized any of these names, I ask you to send in inspiring stories to share. It will be these cherished moments of your life that will move others to seek out teachers to learn this art form and have a strong desire to pass this feeling on to others. You are and have been empowered now empower others...
