This is an actual Craigslist ad that has been blanked out to protect the individual.  It seems many drum teachers believe that the "goal" is to play in a band.  There is no mention of correct technique, rudiments,  sticking, groove, pocket, individuality, time signatures, sight reading, independence,  different styles of music, etc., all these ENHANCE the individual drummer and make playing with other musicians so much more rewarding and fulfilling.

Hello.
My name is ___ and I am offering lessons for the drum set.
I have over  3 years of experience on the drum set.I have played drums for various bands and have played in a couple of rock/pop/soul bands to explain my music background. I have also done some studio drum recording.

I charge $15/lesson. (one lesson per hour) with first 2 lessons for $25!
You must have your own drum set, or I can help you find one. I am willing to drive anywhere from ___ to ___ to teach you lessons.

I am confident that I can help you learn what it takes to play in your own band!

"The Guild desires to work along side all true drum educators.  We wish to applaud good, inspired and correct coaching. The Guild also wants to extend the hand of friendship and encouragement to all percussion educators who are pursuing excellence and desire their teaching to be out of the park."

In 2008 Orange County Drum Educators Marty Fullard and Robert Ferrell saw the desperate need for a Guild.  Careful and discerning reading of 'Craigslist' only highlighted just how bad things had gotten in Orange County regarding  drum set education. Making things worse is the 'cork board advertiser' in the local drum store. Some are good drum educators with genuine credentials. Craigslist seemed to take on a new low. Reading about drummers who have been playing for a mere 2 years and how they'll make you "fast & loud" for $10/hr really is reaching new levels of insanity.  Problem is, people buy into it, and believe the spin. Drumming like all things is an art that take time, years of practice, tons of patience and a willingness to learn and get better.

On a dime,  Los Angeles based drum educators joined up - then it went national, demonstrating a desire for the Guild's vision and goals. Educators from San Francisco thru  Chicago  were sharing of their  Craigslist nightmares with "quick-buck" drum teachers.   Professional Drum Teachers Guild.com grew, then  Modern Drummer  ran a feature, the rest as they say, - is history.

Professional drum educators from all over the United States and beyond  wanted to join the Guild. Seems like good educators desire to be part of a family built on Integrity within drumming education.  Shows, there are excellent drum educators out there who do share the Guilds principals and ethics.

PDTG isn't the 'Boys and Girls Club of America' nor a self righteous group which sits in judgment of other drummers or drum teachers.   The Guild is happy to work with all professional educators who really do have a professional work ethic, but are striving to improve - and by the way, the Boys and Girls' Club is an awesome organization.  The Guild understands that drummers are a great, but unique people who sometimes have to operate out of very unique circumstance. The Guild is dedicated to the art of professionally educating ALL students in the correct way of drumming.  At the same time, both the teacher and educator maintain their individuality.   Please note, Creativity, energy and passion remain on the front burner.  The Guild does understand that the bar has to be raised and standards increased.  The Guild is determined to do that.  We need the help and support of GOOD DRUM EDUCATORS.

The Guild is raising the bar for all drum educators and is asking all who class themselves as a "drum teacher" to examine him/herself and their professionalism.  Conduct and teaching methods have to be addressed.  The growth and individual progress of the student is of paramount importance. It is also important that the student enjoys and falls in love with drums and the art of drumming for a life time.

The Guild is about the student and the consumer.  The drum educator must have a good and professional relationship with the student and even and family. That relationship must always be worked on and mentor.  The Guild is seeking to establish an umbrella that will cover drum educators and help to establish less experienced drum teachers.  There is accountability, encouragement and support within the Guild.

The Guild wants the consumer to get a fair and accurate account of  good drum educators in Orange County, nationally and even internationally. The Guild is not a business, in other words, the drum teacher's haven't formed a Company or Corporation. There is no merger. There is a code and a practice of higher standards and quality that the Guild members feel is important.  The Guild members, while separate entities in their own right, advertise as drum teachers but conform to the bar and it's standards.

The Guild desires to work along side all true drum educators.  We wish to applaud good, inspired and correct coaching. The Guild also wants to extend the hand of friendship and encouragement to all drum teachers who are pursuing excellence.

Out there, many drummers do teach and inspire. The Guild wants to encourage the real and genuine ones who do an excellent job, but at the same time protect the consumer from amateurs. The "cowboys" are in this for the short term vs..good drum teachers who are in this for the long haul.

Let's do all that we can to be part of a better and brighter future for drummers and drumming in Orange County and beyond.

The drum teachers who belong to PDTG bring to the drum set years and years of experience along with technique, personality and individuality. Each drum educator is dedicated to professionalism, integrity and honesty.
